| Personal History | In 2131, Samantha was born to Alex and Marissa Leyton in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Earth. Growing up with two brothers, she often played rough which her mother protested often. Her father stayed busy with Starfleet, later commanding the Earth Defense Vessel Luna. Her grandfather, a retired admiral with the old United States Navy taught her how to box and began to fuel her interest in flying as well, watching him fly an old British Supermarine Spitfire at various air shows as she grew close to her grandfather. In school however, Samantha often got in trouble for day dreaming in class and skipping school altogether. Her grandfather stepped in and promised to take her flying if she did better in school and stopped skipping. She agreed and her grandfather began to take her flying with him, giving her lessons. At the age of 15, she was a certified pilot and was allowed to pilot her grandfather's spitfire in air shows sometimes. While in high school, she watched her brother join Starfleet as a security officer. Wanting to carry on her family's legacy of service, she made the choice to also join Starfleet. In 2148, Samantha graduated high school with average grades and applied to Starfleet Academy with letters of recommendation from her grandfather and father. She was accepted and enrolled into the Academy's flight program, learning how to pilot shuttle pods and then starships. However, she earned a black mark for damaging a shuttle pod while flying through the Sol System's Asteroid Belt using unsafe maneuvers and speed--adding to her reckless reputation. In 2152, Samantha graduated from Starfleet Academy and was assigned to the Earth Defense Ship, Monitor. The following year, she witnessed the brutality of the Xindi Attack on Earth. After learning that the Enterprise was looking for the Xindi, she applied for a transfer aboard the Enterprise but was rejected, citing she was needed aboard the Monitor in case of further Xindi attacks. Samantha was later promoted to Assistant Helm Officer aboard the Monitor. In 2357, Samantha was transferred to the NX-05 Atlantis as it's Chief Helm Officer--a chance that she embraced, finally having a chance to pilot a NX Class ship. |
