| Personal History | Born in 2127 in Aberdeen, Scotland, Kathryn is the eldest daughter of John and Gabrielle Bell, though her mother kept her maiden name. Both are academics, John specializing in languages, and Gabrielle a medical doctor and researcher. The young Kathryn moved around with her parents and her siblings, (Adrian, born 2129, and Alicia, born 2130). As a consequence, Kathryn was exposed to many of the major cultures of Earth, and also had opportunities to interact with Vulcans and Denobulans a time or two. This, in part, is what fueled her interest in joining Starfleet. Entering Starfleet training in 2144, (Kathryn graduated secondary school early) was a joyous occasion. Though her family worried about her being so far away from them--being in New Zealand at this point--they nonetheless supported her. Kathryn quickly followed her mother's footsteps, choosing to specialize in medicine. This turned out to be helpful, as Kathryn was called to assist in caring for the wounded after a Terra Prime rally turned violent, just weeks before her graduation. One of the victims was her brother, Adrian, even though he was just a bystander. While Adrian did survive, he lost his vision as a result of his injuries. This deeply impacted Kathryn, and she requested leave to help him adjust. She considered leaving Starfleet, but was prevented from doing so due to the friendship--and subsequent intervention--of a Vulcan university student, T'Kael. This was momentous for another reason; T'Kael's roommate was a budding chef, and once she and Kathryn met, they quickly formed a friendship which deepened into something more. Graduating in 2149, Kathryn began her career in Starfleet working at Starfleet Medical. Over the next three years, she attained a graduate degree, and is currently working on her doctorate. After four years on Earth, Kathryn took a year's assignment aboard the Intrepid, and then transferred to the Atlantis. It was quite a shock for her to find that her, by this time fiance, had applied to the Atlantis as part of the ship's civilian kitchen staff. |
