Physical Description | Upon meeting Mattias, most people immediately take note of his prodigious height, a trait he shares with his brothers. He maintains his fitness at a high level as a result of habits built during a semi-successful athletic career during university. His mother passed down her Scandinavian genes which result in his blue eyes but otherwise, Constantine shares many physical traits with his father. They look so alike, in fact, that they are often confused for brothers by those unfamiliar with them, much to Mattias’s chagrin. Constantine is an imposing physical presence. He holds his head high and focuses on good posture though like many others his height, he often has to slouch or duck under low overhanging obstacles. Despite his size, Mattias stays light on his feet and often surprises others with his agility and quickness. His father’s disciplined approach towards outward appearance created a lifelong habit in his son. On duty, Mattias wears a tailored version of his duty uniform that has been custom fit to his dimensions. However, when the situation calls for hands-on, dirty work, practicality wins out over style when it comes to his clothes. Off duty, jeans and chinos are a favorite of his, usually paired with a buttoned down shirt. |

Personality & Traits
General Overview | Those who call him a friend speak to Constantine's expressive personality. It is never difficult to ascertain what sort of mood he is in, as his non-verbal communication is very open and transparent. When he first meets people, Constantine often subtly changes his mannerisms and the way in which he speaks to mirror the newcomer, a byproduct of having experienced different cultures while growing up. Constantine does his best to accentuate the positive traits of the people he meets. Mattias is a social creature, comfortable in crowds, but he either seeks out the company of close friends or finds solace in the gym when he needs to recharge. He tends to commit fully and trusts easily when it comes to his personal relationships, a policy which he readily admits is flawed, but defends as the only way he knows. To Constantine, the destination is incidental - it’s the journey along the way that that gives him the most satisfaction in life. |

Ambitions | Mattias's professional ambition has been inspired by the likes of Captain Archer and the crew of the Enterprise. He hopes to find himself in the center chair of a ship with a mission of exploration in the future. Personally, he is uncertain about whether or not raising a family can functionally coexist with his career choice. He would also like to improve his singing and piano playing. | |
Hobbies & Interests | Growing up, Mattias was never afraid to try a new experience. This led to at least a passing interest in many hobbies, but the ones that have stuck with him over time have been singing, cooking, and reading. His mother's natural talent with her voice gave Mattias the gift of a sharp ear and perfect pitch, giving him the ability to learn new sounds (and indirectly new languages) at a fast pace. His ability in the kitchen is only bested in the Constantine family by his sister, a fact that Mattias disputes in public but admits privately.. A natural conversationalist, one can often find Constantine in the center of a discussion. For a Terran vicenarian, his wide cross-section of life experience affords him the ability to find common ground with many walks of life. His social acumen is such that he effortlessly transitions between speaking and actively listening. |
Personal History | New Year's Day in 2131 found the family of Peter and Ebba Constantine living in the boroughs of New New York. With two boys, ages six and three, already running around the house, Ebba had given up her days as a touring vocalist and transitioned to voiceover work at home while Peter was working his way up the ladder at a New Manhattan law firm. During the second week of January, the Constantines learned they were expecting not one, but two more children to join their family in the form of fraternal twins. On July 24th, 2131, with friends and family nearby to celebrate, the Constantines welcomed Mattias and Natalie to the world. The Constantine children running around the household now numbered four, a welcome challenge for the experienced parents. Starting with the eldest son Peter Junior, the Constantines elected to educate their children at home, hiring instructors when the subject matter at hand fell outside of their areas of expertise. Young Mattias showed early signs of the same intelligence displayed by his siblings, learning four languages to fluency before age eight. A curious child, he was never rushing to complete a lesson or objective, content to ask additional questions until his thirst for knowledge was quenched. His free time was often spent with his nose buried in a book. Constantine himself credits the accounts of the early NX program for piquing his interest in space exploration. Mattias showed the capability for empathy and patience at an early age. The lack of immediacy and competitiveness as a child slowly began to change as he became a teenager. The awkward, lanky child slowly began to grow into his body. His physical gifts translated into success at both golf and hockey, but Mattias never had the mindset or approach of an elite athlete. Still, he was still successful enough both physically and academically to garner scholarship offers to multiple schools around the country after passing his general equivalency tests. In 2149, Mattias accepted an offer to attend Vanderbilt University on a golf scholarship, originally double majoring in linguistics and psychology. It became clear to him that double majoring would incompatible with the depth to which he liked to study. At the urging of Professor Nadia Kuznetsov, one of the Nobel laureates on the team developing the Universal translator, Mattias specialized in the field of exolinguistics during his sophomore year, dropping psychology from his course load. The following semester, he quit the golf team to fully concentrate on his studies. Under Professor Kuznetsov's tutelage, Mattias expanded upon the ability to study and learn language, applying it to several iterations of software that assisted the team in testing the Universal translator. Most of his senior year was spent either inventing new languages to test or improving the speed at which the device functioned. Constantine's name was listed on the academic journal with Professor Kuznetsov, paving his path towards graduation. In March 2153, the Xindi weapon from the Delphic expanse destroyed a large area stretching from Florida to Venezuela. The Constantines learned that Elias, their middle son, had been killed in the attack. Starfleet recruiting offices around the globe saw record activity as people began to volunteer to assist the United Earth's effort to recover from the devastation. In the midst of this, Mattias overcame his grief and graduated summa cum laude with a degree in exolinguistics from Vanderbilt in May of 2153. Leaning on the connections of Professor Kuznetsov, Mattias found himself in class 02-54 in Starfleet's Officer Candidate School. Twelve weeks of strenuous training followed, after which Constantine was commissioned as an active duty Ensign (O-1). Returning home while waiting for assignment, the Constantines celebrated the one year anniversary of Elias' passing, gathering the entire family together under one roof for the first time in many years. In July 2154, the call came from the Bureau of Personnel and Mattias was assigned as a communications officer to the Atlantis, a new NX-class starship under the command of Captain Leah Morgan. Launched on a diplomatic mission to the Xindi homeworld, the crew of the Atlantis soon found themselves stranded over nine thousand light years away from home after a planned shortcut through a radiation storm resulted went awry. Captain Morgan sacrificed herself to save the crew, moving Commander Bethsabée Leroux into the position of Officer in Charge. This dominoes fell in such a way that the twenty-three year old Constantine found himself promoted to Lieutenant JG and the Chief Communications Officer of the Atlantis. |
