Personal History | Helen was born on a small farm in Minnesota, the doctor delivering her in the farmhouse itself just as her father had been and his father before him. She grew up on the farm, learning to love the outdoors and plants in general. All of that changed when a storm came through when she was six and destroyed the farmhouse. The family was okay, but they didn't have the resources to rebuild and were forced to sell the farm. After that things got worse. Her father got a job working in the ship foundries, forging the huge plates of metal that would be used to build starships. Her mother got a job in a replimat as well and more often than not it was just her and her brother in the small apartment. They would attend a local school and Helen found her passion for plants of all types only increased, but she also developed an interest in space. When she was old enough to attend university she went to study herbology and botany. Before long she extended her interests to xenobotany and xenobiology as a whole. She did well enough in her classes, not excelling but also not falling behind. She did well enough in alien species that when she graduated a recruiter for Starfleet caught her attention and she was offered a further course in xenobotany at Starfleet Academy. She was very interested in expanding her knowledge of alien plants so she accepted immediately. While at the Academy she did well enough, but more notably she met her future wife, Olivia Saugn. The two had a wild relationship that wound up getting them both in trouble a number of times. She would do well enough in her classes once more but was fully absorbed in spending every waking moment, not at class with Olivia. Olivia was a queen bitch, and somehow Helen just got swept up in her. The year they graduated they were married and in 18 months they were divorced. It was Helen's fault. Olivia had busied herself so much with work and Helen found herself in the arms of another. It was a stupid mistake, but after that things were never the same. Olivia transferred off the ship they were on together. Olivia went on her course and so did Helen. Helen would transfer to a planet base to study plants in a more permanent basis. She would bounce from planetary base to planetary base, studying plants and flora of all kinds. She would make some interesting discoveries, but never enough to really shake the world. Then she discovered an interesting protein sequence in the root structure of a flower on Yoeshina III. She was about to engage in further research when she was offered an interesting position on an NX Class working in the Hydroponics bay. It offered an interesting challenge so she took her DNA samples with her and found herself on the NX-05 Atlantis. All went well at first and perhaps oddly enough when the ship was lost she was one of the few crew who did not mourn. She had nothing back on Earth to return to and no interest in doing anything more than continue her research. |
