Ben, having returned from the planet, headed to the mess hall for some tea.
He entered the mess, looked around, and saw a few of the crew there. Also there, was Maryln Barick, a civilian who was on board for some experiment, but was trapped hundreds of light years from home with the rest of them.
Ben got his hot tea, and headed towards an empty table. He walked past Maryln, who looked up and stopped him by placing a hand on his arm. "Ben. I'm so happy to see you. Won't you please join me?"
Ben wasn't in the mood for company, but he sat anyway. "It's good to see you too."
She could see that something was troubling him. "Ben, are you alright? Is there something I can do to help you?" She was concerned about him.
Ben looked around the room. He felt the eyes of the other members of the crew starring at him. But when he looked, they all looked away. "Not here..I can't be sure about anyone anymore."
Maryln nodded. "Then come to my quarters, we can talk in private."
Ben nodded, and they got up and left the mess, and walked to her quarters.
When they arrived, she pulled out a chair for herself and when he sat, she sat on the chair that was at her desk. "Now...tell me what's wrong."
It took him a few seconds to start. "I was on the search party for the commander. I'm starting to feel like the rest of the crew don't understand me, or trust me. For instance, when I suggested that the search party set our phasers to stun, some thought that I meant to kill the commander, but as I tried to explain, I thought protecting ourselves against possible dangers." He took a breath. "While I was on the planet, I was helping with bringing up water. I found the commander off by himself, and we started talking. He said that since he couldn't be the ship's helmsman anymore, that I would be named to replace him. I was excited...finally a chance to prove myself worthy of he ship.....but when a lieutenant, injured in the whatever it was that brought us here, regained consciousness, she was named chief helmsman, leaving me to do very little. I've been working, helping out in engineering, and every once in awhile, getting some helm time."
Maryln nodded, "How did that make you feel?"
"Like I'm worthless. If we were back in our galaxy, I would have already filed a transfer request, but I can't do that here. About the only thing left for me is, if we find a habitable planet with a humanoid population, would be to jump ship and live on that planet."
Maryln got up and sat next to him and put her arm around his shoulder. "You're not worthless, and you're not going to leave the ship and live with strangers."
"What's here for me?"
"Me." She leaned over and gently kissed his lips.
Then he kissed her back.
Then the kissing became more intense.
They got undressed and got into bed and made passionate love till the morning.
