Dear Mum,

Its been years since we spoke. My fault or yours, who can remember now. Now I am hundred of years from home and know that we will never see each other again. I understand that your reasons were concern for my safety and wellbeing, and my reasons was that I needed to go. To get out into the new frontier that was opening. I am a pilot now. A damn good one, that is one of the pilots of the Atlantis. Its wonderful to pilot the ship, to watch the stars fly by, to explore the planets and areas we learned about in school.

My apartment in London, please do not sell it. Keep it, rent it out. It is part of our family holdings, and who knows, you may want to use it yourself. I know that you have turned down the offer from the Imperial College London many times, but it might be the best thing for you and your career. Use the apartment, you will like it. It over looks Hyde park.

In the study is a safe, in it are several manuscripts I had been toying with while piloting shuttles around earth dry dock. I have an old classmate who now lives in New York and works for a publishing house. You could send them to her. Her name is Elanor Harris. She is very good at her job and they maybe worthy of publishing. It would make me happy to know that my work may be published even though I will not be there to see it.

I do not know why I am recording this, it will never be sent, you will never receive it. Maybe, its guilt, or maybe its hope that one day we would see each other again. The longer we are in this area of space, the longer I stare at stars in the distance where Earth is, I know the chances are slim to none.

I know the command team keeps their facade up, so that crew moral remains high, but, I guess I am being realistic for once in my life… yes shock and horror indeed… We will not make it home without a miracle. Even with a Vulcan Warp 7 drive or a subspace vortex from the Xindi, we would not make it home for centuries. A Sub space vortex… it’s an idea but I do not believe we have the technology to build one for the Atlantis. Capable of transporting a vessel at a rate of about six light years per two minutes, the vortices were opened through the generation of a phase deflector pulse, using on-board generators, and were sustainable for hours at a time.

Maybe we will find a race out here, who has exceeded warp 7 or has some sort of technology that can help us get home. But, it is highly unlikely. Some crew have been discussing finding a habitable world and settling down, but the Captain and Command team are against that. They want to get us home. I wonder how long that stance will last in the face of the current situation.

Mum, I love you. I miss you. I will see you again, in this life or the next.

Love Elspeth.

Powerful post. Really hits home the situation.
