Mercy did one last check of her hair and uniform. She noticed she had still not managed to mend the tear in her cuff, she let out a huff and hid one hand behind her back before she reached out and hit the chime outside the Captain’s door. This was a simple request. And the Captain would at least hear her out so there was no real reason why she felt so nervous.
Beth was just about to walk out when the chime stopped her in her tracks and she pressed the door open within a short moment and smiled at the ensign on the other side. "I was just about to leave but come in. What can I do for you?" She wondered indicating the chairs opposite her desk, they were a little more comfortable than the actual desk chairs which Beth was finding she was starting to need.
Mercy jumped slightly as the door was opened incredibly swiftly. “Oh you were? I can always come back later or perhaps talk to you while you walk?” Mercy stepped into the ready room, at the Captain’s bidding. “I don’t wish to make you late for anything. It’s nothing urgent, and it’s a relatively swift request.”
"I was going to be walking to the shuttle bay to check on the progress for the shuttles to disembark to go to the surface. So a few moments if it is indeed a simple request will not hold me up. So Ensign what is it that you need?" The Captain explained quietly tucking a piece of hair behind her ear.
“Oh?” Mercy perked up. “Actually it’s funny you should mention that because that’s why I wanted to talk to you.” Mercy gave a nervous little shuffle then looked at her Captain with a surprisingly determined look. “I would like to request to go down to the planet.” Before Laroux could possibly hope to get a word in edge ways she forged on ahead. “As you might know I have a specialist research background in exo-botany. I would like a chance to look for samples of plants which may exhibit elements of covergent-evolution with the species found on Earth. I’ve made a list.” She pulled a scrap of paper out of her pocket. “All the plants have medicinal properties, if we collect samples and succeed in getting them to thrive on board they could help bolster sickbay’s supplies in terms of treating some of the more common ailments on board.”
Beth looked at the woman and raised an eyebrow as she continued talking before the woman could even continue going into anything. It was not unusual with any of the science department but more so with Ensign Mourne. Beth took the piece of paper and smiled a little at the fact it was a scrap of random paper. “Have you discussed this with medical?”
Mercy calmed a little when the Captain’s first response was questions rather than immediate rejection. That was perhaps a good sign. “Uhm no, not exactly.” In truth she hadn’t wanted to get Avira’s hopes up, but she didn’t want to say that. She didn’t know who Avira had told about her problem and she was still supposed to be pretending she didn’t know. It was enough to tie her stomach in knots.
“I wanted to get permission first before speaking to medical. I couldn’t ask D-Lieutenant Darru because he’s already down there. But I don’t think medical will mind, plus Dr. Avira has asked me for some help with a… particular set of data and we might find something that could assist her in looking for a…” gods this was difficult, she didn’t want to say cure or treatment because of the Captain didn’t know then it would only pique her curiosity. “Solution. It may help her find a solution, so I don’t think she would mind. But even if she doesn’t want to go, I would still like to be included on the next shuttle down if I may?”
“Solution hmm.” Beth raised an eyebrow but nodded. It seemed like the woman had this need to do what she need more than just finding fuel and who was she to stop her when she knew there was space on the shuttle. She leant over and pressed the communication panel before speaking into it. “Leroux to Cargo Bay. Hold the shuttles departure till I get there please.”
Mercy gave the Captain an excited grin and practically bounced in place. "That mean I can go Captain?" If she had a tail right then she would have been wagging it. She was going to see a new planet and maybe scan and collect cool plants. She wanted to run off and ask Avira to come and grab her handheld scanner and some sample pots from the hydroponics lab. She should probably tell Finn Jones and ask if he needed her to look out for anything he might find useful.
Beth chuckled at the excitement she could see behind the woman’s eyes and nodded. “Yes it does mean that you can go down but we need to hurry.” She pointed out awkwardly rising from the chair to head to the shuttlepod bay. She did not want them having to wait to long when the other shuttle had left.
“Yes of course! I’ll go see if the Doctor can come now and then grab my things.” Mercy went from barely contained excitement to outward cyclone of energy. “Thank you Captain. I’ll be no more than five minutes I swear!”
"The doctor?" Beth asked but the woman was already gone out of the door and most likely running along the corridor. It left Beth quietly making a face and thinking about her life choices as she stepped out her office and turned in the opposite direction to head to the pod. She had been hoping to get off the ship before the doctor realised but it seemed that was not to be the case.
