Stenn became aware that for some illogical reason there was an Andorian in his dream.
That was … troubling
What was more troubling was that he could not see this one, there were no images in his dream, it was dark. There was just her voice in the darkness and that was not constant. It appeared to be muffled, indistinct, sometimes nearer and louder, and at other more distant and quieter.
Like the majority of sentient species Vulcan’s had dreams, it was a way for the mind to process recent experiences, consolidate memories and in some case express thoughts, emotions and desires contrary to conscious logical norms.
As a child he had been taught to recall, review and conduct an analysis of his dreams, accepting and understanding the more emotional ones as way to increase peace, calm and logical thought while awake.
He did not recall dreaming of an Andorian before, let alone a female one. This one did not actually appear to be speaking Andorian though, she was speaking another language that he knew, but could not remember.
That was also troubling, he knew that he knew the language, but he could not understand the words.
He decided to go back to sleep for a while.
When he came back into his dream, something was wrong, but he was not sure what. Something about the female Andorian. He could hear her voice again but still not see her in the darkness. There was something wrong with that, but he did not know what it was. He heard her but could not see her.
The female Andorian was close now, he could hear her speaking, in that known but unknown language. There was another sound too, was it music? It had a sort of rhythmic beat to it, a series of soft beeps.
It was not Vulcan, nor Andorian, not that he had heard much Andorian music. It did not seem particularly tuneful, more like a repetitive background beat or tempo. He wondered if the woman would begin singing?
Then he realized what was wrong! How did he know it was a female Andorian when he could not see her and she was not speaking Andorian! That was… puzzling.
He would need to sleep on that.
The smell! He could smell her and he knew it was an Andorian smell That was what had been troubling him before. This was an unusual dream. There were none of the customary images, only darkness but there were sounds and smells.
There was another smell now and another voice. It was also speaking that known but not known language, it was a light voice, also female perhaps.
But not Andorian, the voice’s owner was much more pungent than the Andorian. Like the words they were speaking he knew that smell too, but not which species it belonged to
This was a long dream, he wondered what time it was, he would probably be getting up soon to…
To…
To…
What was he going to do when he awoke?
He could not remember!
Why was that? He should know that, even in his dream, this was also… troubling
He felt tired again.
Light!
Bright light!
A very bright light, shining directly in his eye!
Bright light in his right eye!
It was like noon on Vulcan, staring at the Sun!
He should close his eye the light was…. Painful!
No, he should overcome the pain. Pain was illogical, or was it?
Logically it was an automatic physiological response warning his body of something harmful to it.
That was logical!
Allowing pain to create illogical emotions was the thing to avoid.
Why was he thinking about this when there was a bright light in his eye he wondered.
He should close his eye.
He could not, he felt the lids moving but something was stopping them from closing.
What was doing that?
He tried to move his head, but there was something on his face. What was on his face?
The thing on his face moved!
Was it a creature?
It was warm and soft, but it was holding his eye open!
There was a voice again it was very close now. The voice was saying the same word over and over. He knew that word. It was a Vulcan word. It meant something in Vulcan. It was a Vulcan name.
Stenn!
Whose name was it?
The voice said it again.
Stenn!
The thing on his face moved, it patted his cheek.
What was that?
Then he noticed the music was back, that rhythmic beating, it was faster this time and seemed to be increasing.
Stenn! Wake up! You’re nearly fully conscious. Open your eyes, Stenn!
One was already being held open, he did not want to open the other, the light was very bright.
Now there was movement in the light. A shadow come over. It was a blue shadow with antenna.
The voice was speaking that word again and others.
Stenn! Come on, wake up, open your eyes. Stenn!
The voice said “I’m giving him the hypo Doctor
Something bit his arm. Another creature?
Was that venom?
It felt cold, he could feel it moving up his arm towards his chest.
It felt… Invigorating
It felt… like it was time to wake up.
He hoped he had not overslept
He opened both eyes, the soft thing on his face moved away.
The blue shadow was still there and another shadow come into view, this one was… pinker.
He looked at them, they were both female, one was the Andorian, the other was… Human!
Human… that was the language the voice was speaking…Human!
He knew them!
But what were they called?
He looked beyond them, why was he not in his cabin?
This looked like sickbay!
Why was he in Sickbay?
This was not… logical
Welcome back Stenn A voice said.
Now he knew what Stenn was, it was him. He was Stenn.
He opened his mouth to speak but only managed a croak. The Human pushed a tube into his mouth and cool water flowed. He found he was thirsty, very thirsty.
He heard somebody say “Alert the Captain, tell her Captain Stenn is awake”
