Sam was often found training. In times of strife is was a stress reliever and one he had instilled into his teams to help take their minds off situations such as the ones they were in. Sadly their was a downside that training, extra physical activity often increased metabolism and the need for food or nutrition. In the past few days he had cut training programmes by half to help combat this but still he needed them able for anything.
Moments before an unexpected arrival he had given his last ration away. He did that, call it neglecting oneself to look after your people. The MACO in question looked weak at the knee's and he had found out that he was giving his rations to other members too. He was lightly scolded into looking after himself more by his unknowingly hypocritical Commanding Officer.
Beth had slipped into Marine Country without anyone spotting her. She knew the Marine's must be suffering by now as the Officers and Enlisted under her were suffering from irritability and lack of concentration and they were not anywhere near as physically tasked as them. "Commanding Officer on deck." A male voice boomed as they spotted the woman finally passing the training room. The Commanding Officer smiled softly as people rose there feet and quickly indicated for them to sit back down.
"Carry on!" She quickly ordered the 10 people in the room as she made her way to the Marine CO's office and tapped on the open door.
Looking up from his desk he rose quickly. "Ma'am! I wasn't expecting you!" he said as he attempted to tidy up his desk a little.
"No one expects the Spanish inquisition," Beth said with a smile as she dismissed him coming to attention quickly. "Do not tidy up on my account." She added looking at the desk wondering what he had been looking at that had created such a mess.
"That is very true ma'am. Please sit." he said as he realised he was being rude. Sam did notice she had been looking at his hurried attempt to tidy his desk. He sighed, "Letter from my kids." he said. "They wrote them before I was sent on board, something about Daddy becoming a spaceman and they were going to miss me. Stuff like that." he said as he subconsciously looked at their photo's on his desk.
The woman sat and glanced at the children in the photo. They were adorable and she could see why Sam was distracted with thoughts like that running around. "I get it. How old are they? What are there names?" She wondered thinking perhaps he wanted to talk about them.
"Eldest, James, is 8 years of age and my twins, Kayla and Sophie, are both 5 years of age," he said as he stared at the photograph a little. "At least they have my ex-wife to be there for them. Given the circumstances I don't see me making prom for any of them," he said rather resignedly.
"No, I cannot see it either." The woman said softly as she glanced around again This was not just a social call after all. She was doing the rounds to try and figure out how the crew... her crew were handing the knowledge that they were 150 years from home. "How have they taken the news of how far from home we are?"
"I've had to break up some fights, comfort some tears or emotional outbursts and counsel some, albeit my counselling technique is not as good as those in the medical field but I try. They are adapting, as marines do. We take it hard but usually adapt quickly to very fluid situations. We live hard lives, most of the time and we will get through this, mum (ma'am). We have no option but too." Sam replied looking at the woman before him.
"It has been four days. I am not expecting people to adapt so quickly Samuel." The woman said dropping the formalities for a moment. They were alone, she could allow it. "This is going to take time that we hopefully get." The woman was under no illusions that they needed to find food and quickly.
"No, I am aware of that Commander. However we live our lives constantly adapting to adverse situations so hopefully we will come out the other side quicker than Starfleet personnel." Sam replied as he realised the enormity of the weight on the woman's shoulders. "Have we came any closer to finding a source of food? Water?"
"I like to think we come out the other side as one crew." It was the only way that they would eventually survive this my becoming a lot closer and reliant on each other. The woman offered a smile as started to tie up her long hair that was now getting on her nerves. "I am afraid not," Beth admitted. They were searching but there was nothing so far that was triggering the sensors to something edible for them.
"We will. Tragedies and hardship often have a way of bringing people together, although I've seen the opposite happen on some occasions but I don't believe that will happen here." he replied smiling back at her. Bad news followed as they had not come closer to finding the resources needed to survive this short time frame let alone a longer journey home. "When we find something we should as always be careful. History has always shown that the strong protect resources quite violently, most of our own history is loosely around the fight for such. We should be vigilant when we find something and ignore the rush to gallop in."
"Oh, I think with Sloan on our side along with you it will be okay and vigilance will happen with us all focused and prepared. I would like us to be one crew, not divided." She murmured softly as she rose feeling a lot better about the situation now that she had, had a conversation with the man.
"We will be ma'am. Change will take time but we will get there, we have no option but too and my men and women will be told that. Most understand the unique circumstance we are in and have already started moving forward positively." he replied standing as she did.
It was exactly what the Officer in Charge wanted to hear if she was honest. She needed to hear that things were moving in the right direction and that it could only get better in her opinion.
