It had taken Avira some time to read up on procedures surrounding human pregnancy. She wanted to make sure she wouldn't miss important dates or details. Then she realised that the father wasn't completely human. But there was little to no medical information on Romulans. Only what they had scanned for themselves in Sloan. And he wasn't a woman. Nor pregnant. Case could be made for the fact that he wasn't truly Romulan anymore either. To say all of the circumstances combined made this a very interesting pregnancy would be to massively understate all of the circumstances. So Avira had been preparing the med-bed and all of the devices she was going to need half an hour in advance. She had done some practising with Nurse Daglish the day before and was thankful that she'd be there to keep an eye on proceedings as well.

"Is it normal to be this nervous?" A year ago Avira would never have admitted to nerves, least of all to a member of her staff. The humans had a way of getting to her though. Of lowering her guard to the point where she now readily admitted to Daglish when she wasn't feeling optimal, or how she'd had a bad night. Or on this case, when a routine check-up of a pregnancy gave her nerves when tending to war wounds didn't so much as make her antennae twitch.

Lottie smiled a little as she continued what she was doing to the bio bed. It had been a busy morning and she wanted to make sure the bed was at pick performance. “Completely Doctor.” The nurse had been a nurse for long enough to know the ins and outs of many doctors and she liked to think their partnership was something special because for a long time it had just been them dealing with everything. “But this is the Captain. She’s practically being round up to come to this appointment so she wants to be out of here quickly.” She teased a little.

Avira nodded, then nodded again. Willing her antennae to relax. "I'm sure even the Commander will want to savour these kinds of moments." It would have been a kindness if the Captain would have showed up in that moment. Instead the Andorian doctor was left waiting for several excruciating minutes, fiddling with the equipment, feeling useless. If this was really to become a more generational ship than this was to be the first of many such procedures she was about to have to handle. It sent her down an entire thought spiral. One she didn't care for one bit. When the sickbay doors parted the doctor couldn't repress a sigh of relief.

Lottie smiled as the woman finally appeared. "Apologises Doctor, Petty Officer. One of our guests set off an alarm that delayed change over on the bridge." The Captain explained, chucking her braid over her shoulder.

"No problem Captain," Lottie assured with a small smile as she indicated the bio bed that was waiting for her.

"We're well prepared, Commander, we should have you back to your duties in no time." Avira assured her, she grabbed the medical tricorder. "We'll scan the full fetus, do some measurements and check internal organ development. You can watch along on the monitor overhead," She was working the settings on the device before she paused and looked up, "Do you wish for me to reveal the sex? We should be able to tell."

“I would appreciate the lie down to be honest.” The captain said knowing with both of them she could admit any weakness or issues. She offered a smile and lay down. “I would love to see if they are a boy or girl. Thank you for that” She admitted having been thinking on it recently as it would allow her to prepare things better. This would be the first child born onboard and the baby was half a species that they did not know about.

"All right then, we'll make sure to take our time." Avira gave a smile, "could you please lift your shirt and lower your trousers." She wasn't going to be doing an old fashioned ultrasound, Lottie had explained to her how the humans used to do their scans and it sounded very complex. But the less fabric in the way the better the scan, besides it gave an opportunity for a visual inspection of the stomach. "We'll start with locating the heartbeat." She held the scanning rod for the medical tricorder over the abdomen and hovered around a bit until she got a positive response from the hand scanner. Pressing the button to transfer it to the overhead medical display. The sound of a tiny heartbeat immediately filled the room.

Beth had remembered to come into sickbay in her flight uniform, around her waist, to make this part of the examination easier, so she was able to pull up her very stretched vest and push her shorts down as well. Beth was silent for a moment before she let out a small sob as she heard the heart beating for the very first time. There was no one to admit to, but sometimes she worried it was a phantom pregnancy or something equally as destructive to the crew. Lottie smiled and held out a cloth to the Captain, discreetly to allow her to wipe her tears. "Thank you." She whispered, embarrassed but relieved, that it was this pair.

"Good, strong, rhythm." Aviria pointed at the beating heart on the screen, "all four chambers are filling and emptying as expected." She moved the scanning rod to get a view of the upper body, zoominig our slightly and silencing the heartbeat since she'd be moving away from it, she didn't want it replaced with bubbling intestines and other ghostly and ghastly sounds a body was bound to make. "We'll be checking of all the other parts have formed properly and I'll do a measurement of the head." She explained, "we can see deformities and if there are any still have plenty of time to come up with a treatment plan before the due date."

“But we have lots of support with Lieutenant if there are issues. He has provided us with everything he knows on Romulan as well as Vulcan physiology.” Lottie said brightly. The Captain smiled at the Petty Officer who was trying to be kind but she much rather took the Doctors approach and be logical.

“Do what you need to do Doctor,” Beth assured.
